Are there slots in both ends of the eccentrics? I guess what I am really asking is with the spt in place could the screw drivers be used from underneath to adjust the eccentric tubes?
Yes, there are screw drivers slots in both ends of the eccentrics. As for turning the eccentrics with the weight of an spt resting on the eccentric - I don't know. As for laying on the shop floor to do this - maybe you but certainly not me. Getting up off the floor when done would be more work than heisting the band saw.

I have never seen any reference to these slots. They may never have been intended as screw driver slots but they sure work for me in this application.

You might try it with a band saw. I think you can gain access to the tops of the eccentrics from within the bandsaw. Again, I don't know. I'll have to look.

PS: The spindles are visible from within the bandsaw but not accessible for this purpose.

Spindle Alignment Gauge for Bandsaw

Post by dusty »

I may add a stopper (marker) to this gauge so that I do not need to drop a line off the spindle but this is my Spindle Quick Set Jig.

I do not need to take the band saw on and off multiple times to get the band saw shaft aligned with the drive shaft of the Mark V and I do not need to utilize a gauge for eccentric height. The eccentrics have been marked with an insertion depth mark.

I only need to handle the band saw once and everything lines up as it should.

With the jig installed as you see here, I use the two screw drivers to simultaneously adjust the two eccentrics until the line on the gauge aligns with the plumb bob (center of drive shaft). The line on the gauge was put there AFTER the band saw had been properly aligned with the drive shaft during the initial set up procedure. That long line is NOT the jigs' center line. It marks the eccentric position when the bandsaw drive shaft is in line with the headstock drive shaft. That procedure will not need to be done again.

The eccentrics have been set to a predetermined depth also determined during that initial setup.

You young, healthy guys probably don't give a hoot about this now but there is a chance that you will one day.:)

PS: I reread this and was a bit confused by my own instructions. The eccentric tubes should be fully inserted so that they rest on the offset. It is the SPT whose height is determined during the initial setup. Once determined, the eccentrics should be secured to the SPT and not changed (loosened). When removing an SPT, leave the eccentrics attached.

Is it possible to turn the tubes all the way and it still not line up? It seems I cannot get the spindle from the BS to align or get on the front side of the headstock piece.

If that is true, what else can be adjust besides the Tubes?

Thanks.

I did get it to line up, But I think I have an issue with my back tube being high, After I unscrewed the leveling screw for the tube and pushed on the headstock a bit, the two couplers lined up. May need to make my own post about the way tube not being level.

The purpose of the 'leveling screw' is not to provide spindle alignment.(even though SS has been known to say so)

The purpose is to eliminate way tube twist.

An alternative "adjustment" is to rotate the spt mount casting(/leg) about a vertical axis.

I backed the leveling screw out years ago and have never used it.

Yea, I think I have a twist someplace, way tube likely. Its almost like I need a leveling screw that would push down on the back tube instead of up. I think I will try loosening the way tubes and rotate them in place.
