Bandsaw case window dimensions

Post by jo3 »

I'm hoping somebody with the newer bandsaw case with the tension adjustment window could measure the dimensions for me. I want to make my own, but thought I'd make it a bit smaller than the official window in case a future owner wanted to change it to the Shopsmith kit.

Thanks,
Joe

As far as I know SS doesn't sell a kit for just the window. I think the kit is a complete bandsaw cover including window, access hole for the tension adjustment, and dust port. (Currently on sale for ~$70.)

The factory window appears to be a parallelogram, though I'm not confident I can readily measure the sides and angles to confirm. For sure not a rectangle though. Approximate dimensions are 3.1" high X 2.2" wide.

Thanks!

They do sell the window separately, though maybe calling that a "kit" is an exaggeration. I figured I'd save the $16 by finding a piece of plexiglass.

Joe,

As you discovered from your link, Shopsmith sells the Clear Plastic Window for Bandsaw Cover Part number 522217 itself. Read the review on the website page for some helpful information from a Shopsmith user that added the window to their older Bandsaw. Click on the pictures for a larger view of them to see what was done.

As David pointed out the Bandsaw Cover is currently on sale. These sales usually only last for a few days. If your Bandsaw Cover is an older one that doesn't have the dust port either, now is a good time to consider upgrading to the current cover with the dust port, window and tension adjustment hole. I did that for my 1998 Bandsaw some time ago when it was on sale.

Having the window and tension adjustment access hole makes it much easier to set the blade tension when starting to use the Bandsaw and releasing the tension after finishing without removing the cover as needed with older covers.

The dust port used with dust collection keep it much cleaner inside the Bandsaw.

I did notice the new cover on sale, but also that they sold the dust port and the window separately. So I bought the dust port to retrofit and figure I can install my own window ($15 vs $70).
