Painting Goldie / Brownie

The pix below show my first attempt to paint a 'goldie/brownie' part.

The leg on the left is 'original' SS paint. The leg on the right has been painted.

All these pix were taken in bright sunlight. Apparent color differences may be altered by different lighting.

The paint used was Rustoleum 'Hammered' 7210 GOLD, upc 20066 72108.

Although the color does NOT match, it IS not bad. I do not know if a different batch of 'original' SS paint would be more or less 'gold' or 'brown'. Perhaps different batches contribute to the varying reference to these vintage SS as both 'Goldies' and 'Brownies".

My hardware store did NOT have any 'Copper' colored Rustoleum Hammered paint, but has ordered it. I anticipate it will be more 'Coppery' than 'original' but samples ARE to be posted after next week.

I thought PH said "And now for the rest of the story".

The match looks to be a little bit more yellow, than brown. But a GOOD match any way.

Yellow = 'gold'? Yes. BTW Rustoleum is NOT trying to MATCH SS's colors. We are merely trying to find something reasonably close. Similar to Greenies folks 'problem'. The hammered texture does nicely(if not put on too thick AND runny). The more hammered look of the painted leg is due to heavier coat of paint. I believe a thinner coat will result in a texture closer to 'original'.

PH started his pgm with 'SBFN'.

After he teased us with the first part of the story, he would(sometimes after a commercial break) then say 'ANFTROTS'.

Gorgeous paint job! You nailed the texture perfectly. Color looks close enough where driving by 60 mph, you'd never know the differance from OEM.

Give us some details about the metal prep / priming. I am interested in knowing. I was going to paint mine today but I didn't get to them. Hopefully tomorrow.

As you can see from the leg on the left(original), the legs were in pretty good condition to begin with. There were a few areas of very light/spotty rust and flaking around the bottom(inside foot) area.

Prep consisted of light sanding those 'problem' areas and very light surface skim sanding over all.

If you look closely at the 'gold' closeup, the upper right area is I think what a thinner coat will result in texture wise. This stuff comes out of the nozzle very rapidly(volume) and WILL run on vertical surfaces. I would recommend NOT trying on vertical surfaces(while vertical). This paint needs to 'flatten out' to get the blending of the 'mixture' that provides the texture.

Shake can often while applying.

P.S. BTW it dries MUCH faster than stated on can. Pix were taken within 1 day of application. The painted leg was essentially completely dry and NO problem to handle. ALSO keep the can upright when spraying.

You did a great job painting it and matching the color. I know that matching the color is just about impossible because the original color is hard to find. IF you can find it. I'll be interested in seeing the rest of it.

I think you did a great job. Would love to see it when you are done. Right now I am working on painting a 51 ER the hammer gold. Going to turn this one into a drill press.
Love seeing all of these machines clean up. But remember they were built to use, and use and use.

As I said earlier, the 'copper' colored paint will NOT be here until next week. I am at this point 'experimenting' with the paint(s). My FINAL intention is to 're-create' a PARTIAL goldie which will probably be a version of a MINI. I (currently) intend to use it as a roll-around storage bench for SPTs and MAYBE later as a combination sanding/power/storage/??? station. The MINI size greatly limits the use of a table carriage/saw but it IS possible(if you can live with the difficulty changing blades).
I do NOT at this time have a headstock to use on it, hence the storage intent(for the time being). I will be doing all this over a long period of time so if you are interested, please be patient. My 'shop time' is currently very limited.
