My power pro 1 works well and I really like it. But sometimes the screen will go off and yet it is still on. Not a problem as long as I know what I set it last. It will reset if I turn it off completely, wait a bit, then turn it back on. Kind of made me nervous wondering if it would happen more frequently and eventually not show ever.
I was using it in drill press mode and the quill was kind of hard to extend and wouldn't retract on its own, it felt kind of grindy both in and out. So between the two issues, (I could have probably fixed the quill issue but...) I pulled the trigger and spent the $1600 to upgrade to the power pro 2 and fix everything else. I know with the upgrade they have a new quill system but I'll let them service it. I'll let you know how it goes.
I still have another Shopsmith with a conventional headstock so I'm not dead in the water in the meantime.
Something Better Than Repairs Is Coming
Re: Something Better Than Repairs Is Coming
I recently bought the DIY upgrade kit for PP1 to PP2. So far that's not going well, but that's another story. The current kit includes a new PowerPro Control Control Assembly (aka Power Supply). This got me wondering who gets the removed parts when SS does the upgrade? These leftovers (what we called mod residue in the service) were a pretty big part of the reason I pulled the trigger on the upgrade.AEA wrote: Fri Jul 03, 2026 11:39 am ..I pulled the trigger and spent the $1600 to upgrade to the power pro 2 and fix everything else...

Re: Something Better Than Repairs Is Coming
So you're doing the upgrade yourself and that isn't going as well as you expected. Without hearing the rest of the story I'm glad I'm letting them rebuild everything. I'm hoping to avoid "another story". I wouldn't know what to do with the "mod residue" anyway, so it would just sit in a forgotten box in my garage/shop.
I just got notice they sent me the box. The delay was because I said,"well, since you're shipping me an empty box, I'll buy the shop slick stuff, it'll save me the price of shipping. Just put it in the empty box." It turns out they were sold out and had to wait for them to get more. Now it's on the way.

Re: Something Better Than Repairs Is Coming
The issues I have were caused by bad parts in the kit. The Control Panel has a 'near dead' zone such that it was very difficult to access any of the top row functions including Quick Start and Favorites. The menu driven part of the screen seemed to work fine. And the Woodruff Key in the Quill Feed Pinion Shaft was incorrectly but very forcefully installed, such that I couldn't correct it or budge it. Shopsmith confirmed both and new parts are in transit.AEA wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2026 9:42 am So you're doing the upgrade yourself and that isn't going as well as you expected.

Yikes, now I'm really glad that I'm not doing it myself. They can make sure it's A OK before sending it back. I'm sorry for your frustration and glad that they are making it right. The issues I have were caused by bad parts in the kit.
