I have an old Magna 10E Shopsmith.The gears that operate the drill press are jamed.Anyone know how to solve this problem?
Could you explain the problem a little better? Do you mean the quill doesn't extend? What kind of condition is the machine in? The quill on my first 10ER would not extend when I received it. It had been left outside in the weather for a couple of years and the spline drive had rusted to the pulley drive sleeve (see the cutaway image I provided below). I took the headstock off the ways and removed the locking wedges from the headstock (so I knew they couldn't be the problem). I turned it upside down and let the quill soak in oil. After it soaked a while, I applied a lot of pressure to the feed handle - so much pressure I thought the handle was going to break. But, it finally popped free.

my 10E didnt have depth gauge nuts and let the spindle go out to far. When I tryed to put it back in, it locked up and have not been able to move it.
So at this point it won't extend or retract, correct? Maybe someone else would have a better idea, but it sounds like the spline came out of the pulley sleeve and when you tried to put it back it got out of alignment enough to jam. How much further did it go back in before jamming? How hard have you pulled on the handle to try to extend it?
If it were my machine, I'd take the motor off the headstock so I could get a good look inside at the quill to see what's going on.

As it turns out I was just putting one back together today. I found it didn't go back in like I was expecting it to. Since I had the drive bearings out of the headstock and the quill lock clearly out of the way I knew it had to do with how it should start back in. It took me a few tries to feel the gears while lining them up. When it got to the right spot it just popped in.
However the other comments about the spline alignment and the quill lock are also thing to worry about.
I'd say play with it a little and the combination of handle position and quill position it should just go together.

Thanks for the help guys.Ihad to just put more preasure on the handle and it broke lose.Looks like the old girl is back to work again. How old are the model 10E SS?I bought this from my uncle. He bought it new. Thanks again.
The E & ER was in production from 1947 through 1953. "E" stands for "Experimental" and was introduced in November 1947. In late 1948 several changes and upgrades were made and the model name was changed to "ER" which stands for "Experimental Revised"
My first ER has "Model E" on the nameplate, but a serial number that starts with "R" and has all of the "ER" upgrades. I've been told that means it was a model E that was factory retrofitted to ER specs before being released for sale.

The yahoo 10er site has a spread sheet that can give you a good idea as to age. You can also send in a survey for your machine to add to the listing.
If you want to post the serial number I have a copy of the spread sheet here at my desk and I can look it up for you. The resolution is by year.

As close as i can figure this SS could be a 1949 or 1950. The serial # is R27414.It still has the original motor and does what I want it to do.Sure wish other products would last like this has.
