I don't have a real firm schedule for cleaning and waxing but I would say I wax no less than 6 times a year.

I clean out the headstock any time I do any heavy work or if I make more than a few cuts in MDF. That stuff gets deep into everything.

I usually clean and wax after every project. And maybe a couple times while it's going on. Like when I start getting black marks on the wood. I'll wax it when I'm done for the day and let it dry overnight before I buff it out.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders, molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

I wax not as often as I should, but that said; I wax whenever I find wood is no longer sliding as easily as before - OR - when ever black marks appear on the work piece(s).

I use my shop and Shopsmith about 250 days of each year and use a can of wax about once a year. So the direct answer to you question is "often".
