SS Speed reducer noisey

Hi Everyone,

My first visit here. I have a 10 yo Mark V. Question for anyone. Is there any maintenance required for the speed reducer? Does it need to come apart to lube? Here's why----

I was turning a hunk of wood yesterday, and the motor sounded like a cement mixer. I took the cover off , and found the inner sheave(part # 110 in catalog) was broken at the end, where it meets the quadrant. The inner shaft/rollpin in the sheave was siezed. I replaced it, and realized there was a lube access hole that I did not know about. Just like in the front lower sheave.

After I replaced the inner sheave, I lubed both shafts, blew out the motor, and adjusted the belt. It ran like new. It was so quiet, I now can hear some noise from the speed reducer. It may be just normal noise. Anyone?

Hi,

The speed reducer has, what I think, an abnormal excessive rotational bearing type noise, that seems a bit much. The Shopsmith motor was so noisey, for so long, I just do not remember what the normal noise is from the reducer.

One of my questions was....is there any type of maintenance required for the reducer? Does anyone take it apart to lube it, or is it a sealed unit?

The bowls are just some of my turnings-these pieces are from a piece of Cocobolo that I found in Mexico while on vacation.

Hi,

If you have the manual check the last page for maintenance information.

Specifications are that you check belt tension every 50 hours or 6 months...

Bearing are self-lubricating sealed... of course they could be worn out???

For vibration they suggest it may not be properly installed.

Larry - Looks like Ed (rebel) had your answer to the noise - hope you get it fixed soon.

BTW - to see the photos with you text - do exactly what you did to upload them and then- before you post - click on the paper clip again and then select all photos from the manage attachments window.

Thanks Ed and Chuck,

I can not seem to find my original manual for the reducer. I see on the front of the speed reducer, a rectangle plate and at the bottom there is a 2 inch spring that covers what appears to be an adjusting screw. I will play with this screw and see what happens. If anyone has the original manual for the reducer, please let me know. I see no breakdown pics on the shopsmith website.

Call SS. I am sure they have that manual. They are reasonably priced(IMHO).

BTW I do NOT recommend 'playing' with screws/plates/whatever without SOME knowledge of WHY it exists.

Hi Goldie,

Got the manual from Shopsmith. It appears there are only 2 adjustments, for the belt drives(#14 adj screws), and no internal maintenance. So, I will check the adjustments and see what happens.
