Pen Mandrel For Shopsmith 10ER?

Post by patm1313 »

I have a 10ER and I'm wondering whether a No. 1 MT or No. 2 MT pen mandrel would fit in it.

Any help appreciated.

pen mandrel on shopsmith

in short no. a #2mt mandrel would fit in the tailstock, but you could not turn a pen with it. you have three basic options. #1 would be to use a straight pen mandrel with your drill chuck. #2 would be to use the straight mandrel in your 1/4" router chuck(the shopsmith accessory) if you have one. #3 would be to use an after-market pen mandrel such as the on offered by pennstate industries.

as idh has stated it will work great. that is the one that i use the most. i do not reccomend the shopsmith live center however for use with a pen mandrel. my reccomendation would be a sixty degree machinist lathe live center. they are harder than woodworking live centers and will last longer. they are about $20.00 at littlemachineshop.com

Pen mandrel for shopsmith

I use a shopsmith 1/4 router bit holder, the pen mandrel is threaded into the morse taper, unscrew it, put it in the router bit holder, and it works perfectly, i've been using this for over a year now, and have had great results. I also use a stronghold chuck on the opposite end of the mandrel, it adds a great deal of stabilty and vibration dampening when turning pens and small diameter projects.

I'll add a +1 for the PSI mandrel. I own one also and it works well.
