$50 Table Saw Mod

I got the idea to add a second carriage and table/trunion assembly to my Mark V 500. So far, all appears to be working nicely. I really like the extra surface area and options for placement of the fence and miter gauge.

Looks like it should work real good. You definitely have 500 tables and carriages but is the headstock a 500 headstock?

I don't use this configuration very often but when the need arises it sure is great. I believe you will be pleased.

Hey, Mark - you should feel great about your mod. You had a need and you solved it. That is what this is all about.

The "C" Headstock and the Red Safety Switch were introduced sometime in the early 90s. I don't know when they quit producing 500s but with your mod there isn't much that an upgrade would do for you. You got it all.

I just took a look on the SS history page. It says the C headstock with the switch was moved to the left of the speed control and the red safety key were started in '91. Also, the 510 became the primary 5 in 1 tool in '96. Being made in '92, I'm fairly sure mine is a 500...although, the 510 was introduced in '85.

Are you sure you and dusty aren't related somewhere back in the old county? As was mentioned one of the cool things about a shopsmith is the ability to do things like the two of you have shown.

If you have the time and a bit of money I would suggest seeing if you can find the PTWFE (Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone) and if you can find the edition published by shopsmith when they were in Tripp City OH it would cover the 500. Lots of trick and jigs to make to get even more out of your machine. I picked one up off one of the book sellers on the net for $9.98 + S/H ($3.??).

I also wanted to mention that a recent headstock I purchased has the date of Feb 13, 1991 and is still a "B". I have heard the "C" started soon after that date.... can't say for sure if that is true.

I think the answer to your question is YES but it might be best if you were more specific.

Putting another carriage on obviously limits some movement, especially with a table installed. But, by moving the carriages some, you can install a belt sander, jointer or band saw on the left end just as if the 2nd carriage wasn't there.

You can go into the drill press mode but I would advise against that. This puts just too much weight up too high, shifting the center of gravity. Not good.

I installed the 2nd carriage to resolve a problem where I felt like I needed a lot more table space than I had. However, I did not acquire the carriage and extra table for that purpose. These are parts that I am accumulating in hopes of building a shorty.
