Stalled projects, temporary solutions and a good long weekend spent in the shop

After every major project is cleared out of the shop, I like to do a major cleaning. I am fairly organized but some times it is hard to keep up with the clutter. Saturday I got up and started the cleanup, and kept tripping over all my newly acquired SPT's. Now with the planning of building a nice bench to organize every thing, I decided to turn my attention to the table that came with my last Mark 5 purchase as a temporary solution. The legs were sturdy but the rest was crap.

The first step was to cut off the bent leg bottoms and apply a coat of black paint. Then I dug up some 8/4 maple and started playing around.

It turned out so nice I had to go get some casters and since I was out of maple a 2x8 in yellow pine.

Before Christmas after the economy crashed I found myself with a little extra time on my hands. I started the following project from a magazine picture and some recycled chestnut I had laying around. It got put on the back burner back in January so I dug it out of the back room and here is the finished project. Just don't ask me what It is. I do not know, I just liked the picture in the magazine.

Gosh Mark for a guy who doesn't know what he's building you sure have a way of doing things right. Great job on both projects. fjimp

The Chestnut Project would make a nice stand for Plasma TV. I like the idea of the SPT table being on rollers. Nice work!

That is a really nice Chestnut whatever it is. How did you finish it and what finish did you use?

I'm like you, Mark! I like the bun feet and the lines of the sides. The paneling back give it an antique look. A pretty piece!:D

Also like you I don't know what it's use will be. The flat screened TV center sounds good!:) I'm guessing the drawers are about 6" high and the shelves would hold DVD cases. Maybe next, is making some sliding book ends to keep the DVDs from falling over.

It is stained with General Finishes Salem oil base stain with 3 coats M L Campbell 15 sheen lacquer. All of the character is natural from the chestnut that came from an old one room school house torn down in the 60,s.

I see the base of the SPT cart/table (all nice BTW) being made into a low shelf and filling up...

It might also serve well if it just had a box with a high back, low front and as large as would slide in place as a handy hopper for "saved bits of wood" (I hate to call it scrap).

Some kind of glides to pull it out on would maybe be nice to make it easy to find just the right pieces in it. It should also be easy to remove completely to dump out and "thin" the contents now and then.

Any one who has THAT much 8/4 Maple laying around, Does NOT need a 'Saves BITS of wood box'!:D

Bottom looks made to order for SOME kinda drawer though!:) Maybe more than ONE?

Silly question: What does SPT stand for? I figure T= Tool.
