Edge to edge gluing.

Post by beeg »

From time to time I have to glue up two boards for a wider panel. The ends match, but the middle seam is uneven. Knot sure why it does that. Anybody have any ideas?

Sounds like the boards need to be ran through the jointer.
very very slight movements of the wood while your cutting it can make the two sawn edges ever so slightly off. The edge may be perfectly smooth due to new saw blade technology but they are not perfectly flat.

No matter what the ad hype the jointer still has a valued place in a the shop.

In fact I almost say a jointer is a mandatory tool in a wood working shop.

You can use an axe to cut the wood and a jointer will clean it up to become fine furniture grade cut.

Beeg, are you talking about a lift at the glue joint. If so, I have the same problem. Woodmag.com shows some edge joining techniques that help with that. But, as Ed says, I always run my edges over the jointer, even though they say you don't need to.

Sorry folks. I wasn't to clear about the problem. YES it's along the glue joint that it's raised on one side of the panel.

That might be a good place to use that biscuit joiner you have in your list of tools.

You could use the 2 way clamps from Shopsmith. They work.

Dicksterp's comment got me to thinking. So I went to SS site to look at clamps and realized I had a set of the double bar clamps. I never realized until now, that they were shopsmith. Heck I could have used these, forgot I even had them.

I guess I have been sleeping like old Rip Van Winkle... I had no idea that jointing had become unnecessary...  :o
