I find that purchasing many of the basic business tools and supplies I am accustomed to purchasing anyplace at the drop of a hat must be searched for and sometimes unavailable for months at a time. My greatest prayer is that business will come to realize we cannot rely on the financial wizards of the day. Nor can we count on politicians to rebuild our society or business needs. We the people of the world must take control of our future and take the necessary risks to build a sound future for our children and grand children. My father was a young adult during the great depression he learned the hard way who and what he could depend on. He never in his life trusted bankers or politicians. I truly wish he were still around so I could hug and thank him for all of the teachings I discounted in my youth. fjimp

I take it from your comments re 'financial wizards' that 'financial planning' has no place in your agency!;)

The SSUsers group on Yahoo! used to do an annual long weekend trip to visit the factory in Dayton. My wife and I were only able to attend the last one, and I'm very glad we did. They were wonderful hosts, and gave us a great tour. I was especially intrigued with the fact that they use Shopsmiths in at a few places in the factory to manufacture Shopsmiths.

A number of women enjoyed the tour (and woodworking), by the way.

tmillie,

I'd strongly recommend you check on the inventory status of each item you order directly from Shopsmith prior to actually placing the order. For Shopsmith is noted for placing orders on indefinate back order. You can find several threads relating to this in this forum.

Undoubtedly now I will get "jousted" for making a less than glowing comment about Shopsmith. ;)

You are correct. I have sold a few life insurance policies and Annuities. I have never once seen or introduced myself as a financial planner. I provide products designed to assist people in mitigating loss from health insurance claims. Similarly I sometimes sell a life insurance product to assist someone who desires to protects their estate or beneficiaries from undo loss in the event of premature death. Financial planners attempt to guess what financial investments will make someone sound financially in the future. The life insurance products I sell may help in that regard but should never be considered as a total financial plan. Then again this is not the place for that discussion so I will end it now. fjimp

Jeepers, that is a hard question. For me, the question of EBAY versus buying from SS around a value vs cost, i.e. wanting the best I can get for the money I have to spend (it is never enough) plus a strong desire to support SS whenever I can.

If SS has the parts in stock, the shipments tend to be very fast (days). If they are out of stock, not so quick.

For example, I needed wheels for my 1994 model 510. I purchased them on EBAY for about 50% or less what I could buy them from SS. And I got them in just a couple of days. Of course, it took me a couple of weeks to get the price point I wanted! They are not new but they will do fine.

Another example: I just purchased a dust cover for my 1994 model 510 (already have one for my other SS's) - got it from SS on sale. I just purchased an extension fence (jointer and saw) from SS. Over the last couple years, I have spent a lot of money at SS. And hope to continue doing so.

I also look for items on EBAY on an ongoing basis (I need a few common parts for my 1994 510 - 1/2" chuck, lathe drive, etc). And I keep an eye peeled on Craigslist - just in case I find a nice deal in Mark V (that is where my 1994 came from). Plus, of course, Bill Mayo is a good source of information and parts.

If I needed repair parts, I will buy from SS.

Speaking the TRUTH is NOT Jousting! Trying to provide accurate(as you understand) it is NOT Jousting!

I have come to believe that 'Jousting' is just another form of oneupsmanship with sometimes non-honorable intentions and a certain looseness with the truth. Trying to clarify details is NOT. Trying to 'correct' previous slightly erroneous information is NOT.
