New owner what type of oil?

So I just got my Mark V last night.. and I watched the cleaning and lubricating video... the problem is I ( being a general newbie) don't know what kind of oil to use. The folks at home depot looked at me like I was crazy when I asked for machine oil... I don't want to ruin the machine 2 days in.

Go to a 'hardware' store and ask for 'turbine' oil. If that gets blank looks, ask for electric motor bearing oil. OR electric fan motor oil, or sewing machine oil, OR 3 in 1 oil. IF all else fails, find a buddy into HVAC and ask him for some 'fan motor bearing' oil. They are real handy when a 6" to 8" tube(spout) comes with the bottle. Good LUCK!

The oil that Nick Engler uses in the Sawdust Session is called Zoom-Spout Oiler by Blue Lake Products. The bottle says it's the "Highest Quality Finest All-Purpopse Turbine Oil". I got it from Shopsmith. I don't know if they still carry it, but you can get it from Blue Lake Products: http://www.bluelakeproducts.com/zoomspout_oiler.htm

I got mine at ACE Hardware.

EDit: I got my Turbine Oil in a zoom spout container at ACE but it is not a bluelake product. I believe the manufacturer's name is Novel ......................... I guess that makes it a Novel Product.

I use 30 weight non detergent motor oil on my SS. Was told to use it by Shopsmith in the 80's. Been using it for 26 years now with no apparent problems.

As I understand it, the important thing is to use a non-detergent oil. I started out using 20W motor oil, then when had no more, used 30W a couple of times. Now using the zoom spout turbine oil from Blue lake Products. If you get this product from a local store, try to get the turbine oil.

The other day when in my wife's sewing room, I noticed she has a Zoom Spout Oiler from Blue lake - the only difference is hers doesn't say Turbine oil. It says Sewing machine oil. Can't say if there is much difference between the two. The oil looks and feels the same!

The last communication(by phone) I had with SS indicated 10W Machine oil. The turbine oil(via Nick...) occurred later. !986 SS manual states "10 wt. non-detergent oil, such as sewing machine oil". 1963 Manual says the same thing.

Yeah but Turbine Oil sounds sexier and everyone knows with a name like that it should go faster:D fjimp

It seems that you just might be feeling a lot better, Jim. I hope and pray that I am correct. Weeks without a fix could put a guy over the top.
