The (?) Blog

Post by john »

Started work on the garden swing this week. I took one of the seat sections off and then took it apart to use the pieces as templates for the new ones. I left the second seat section in place as they hold up the canopy section.

Most of the replacement pieces are cut out and ready for sanding down to final shape. Somehow, I can't seem to calculate my needs correctly as I have now been to that big orange store three times to buy wood. The first time, I knew I would be back as their selection was terrible so I only picked up one piece. Thought I had it right the second time, but I was wrong.

The next project, I am informed, is to sand and refinish a couple of garden benches at the local seniors residence. We donated them several years ago as part of a small memorial garden when my mother-in-law passed away. My wife tends the garden and tells me that the benches are in rough shape and need refinishing. I guess that will take priority over our own bench, but everything will have to wait as we are off to Stowe, Vermont for a couple of days to celebrate our anniversary.

On another subject, way back, I mentioned we were looking at a new BBQ and had trouble finding anything made in Canada, or even North America. Well we finally got a Canadian made stainless steel Napoleon model at about double the price of a "made in China" product with similar features. Napoleon is similar in quality to the made in U.S.A. Weber models and carries a lifetime warranty on the SS and burners. I hope I made a good decision, but at the price we paid, we decided we better start using it more, so we are into the BBQ cookbooks. Should be interesting!

I think I'm being told it is time to pack.:D

Have a Safe and Fun week!

Hi John,

"The (?) Blog" sounds like a black and white monster movie that I would have watched ten times as a kid.

As for projects, having a few with "wife interest" standing behind them is good for the health and well being of the workshop (and marriage).

A very Happy Anniversary to you and your wife; enjoy your trip!

Best regards,

Dennis

Hi John,

Happy Anniversary!

We had our 39th about a half month ago... seems hard to believe since I'm only 38. (My last birthday celebration was on my 38th and from then on I only celebrate the anniversary of that birthday so I get no older)

You are doing better then I am on swing repairs. When we moved to this house 28 years ago I had a platform swing that needed some repairs and refinishing. I put the parts up on an over the garage door rack I made and they are still there. Out of sight out of mind. Not even sure if I'll remember how to put it back together anymore. So if you ever need a bad example feel free to use me and my swing story, nothing like telling your wife that you are not any where near as bad as this guy of the shopsmith forum who...

Thanks for the good wishes guys. It was our 53rd, and Stowe was a nice town to visit, beautiful scenery and lots of shops that we don't get to see in this area, and the price was right since the high season rates start tomorrow for most B&B/inns. Picked up the usual "Vermont" souvenirs for the kids and as fun items such as the "no bite me" soap for my SIL since the bugs seem to be attracted to him.

Ed, Mike:

I know what you mean about tweaking our age. Many years ago, they used to come door-to-door to verify our elegibility for different local elections. I always stated my age as twenty-one, the legal age at the time, but once when my nineteen year old daughter was standing behind me, that statement elicited a strong "d-a-a-d" from her so I had to up it a bit. No need to do that anymore, with new technology there is no face to face encounter, and I don't look 21 anymore.:D

Started back on the swing parts today since it is raining and not much can be done outdoors.

Have fun

John
