I know there's a number of members here that turn pens. Just curious what others are doing to keep their supplies (pen kits & bushings) organized. Currently, I have each different type of pen kit in a separate 1-gallon Ziploc bag, with the bushings for that style pen in the same bag. I also keep a copy of the installation and turning instructions for that style pen in the bag with the kits.

It's worked (so far) but I don't feel it's a "permanent" solution. I've seen some storage bins advertised on a Harbor Freight e-mail flyer:



I haven't gone to HF yet to physically look at them, but IF the large compartments were long enough to hold the pen kits, I figured I could put the kits in the large compartments and the bushings required for that pen type in one of the small compartments, having a separate container for each pen kit.

Anyone else have any other methods for keeping their parts in order that they'd like to share? I hate re-inventing the wheel.

I don't turn pens but I was using a box about like this one for router bits

Big bits are not a problem but the little ones tend to get lost on a big rack and then there are all of those little bearings, bushings, screws etc. to keep track of.
I don't know what length of space pen kits require.

Some of the niftiest storage and hobby containers I've seen are in fabric stores, like Jo Ann's and others. http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp? ... 67&start=1 (A couple of cases on the first pages, but be sure to look at the later pages (#4 & #5)).

Fishing tackle boxes also could fit the bill.

I use a couple of large plastic tool cases made by Plano, that are extra deep, and come with two exterior plastic cases for small parts, and an interior tray.
Toss in zip lock bags to keep project parts together, and you have some degree of organization.
I managed to pick them up cheap when the local Yardbirds Store was closing. Check out the Plano website http://www.planomoulding.com as they have a large selection of containers. However, they can be pricey!

I use a fishing tackle box (father's day gift) for my pen supplies. Lots of trays for the small stuff and room in the bottom for blanks, mandrel, etc.....
