KV pocket doors/Blum tandem undermount drawer glides

This week I will be finishing up a Armoire style entertainment center for a friend. It has 2 pocket doors over 3 drawers. Actually it was the opposite. I have spent a week pricing and beating the bushes. I not sure if I sacred anything up or not. All the shops in my area are very slow right now. I haven't had a paying job in 3 weeks now. Actually I have been at about 50% since November. The good thing is that it has given me time to learn a lot about the computer and time on this forum. The bad thing is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

When using Blum Tandem under mount drawer glides the drawer sides can be 1/2" or 5/8" thick. I am using 5/8" solid poplar so the drawer needs to finish out 3/8" less than the opening. With 1/2" sides this measurement is 5/8". Our opening is 42 inches so I cut the fronts and backs 41 5/8". With half blind dovetails in my Porter Cable jig the fronts and backs run all the way through. The sides however need to be cut 1/2" shorter than the finished size. The drawer needs to finish 21 inches from front to back, so the sides are cut 20 1/2". This is critical.

The groove for the 1/4 inch bottoms needs to be 1/2 inches from the bottom of the sides.

Notice that I have predrilled holes to attach the drawer fronts. It is easier to drill them on the SS before assembling the drawers.

I use these clamping squares until the glue dries.

OK if you are not familiar with these glides you will just have to trust me when I tell you that these are not nearly as complicated as they are going to first appear.

These are 21 inch tandem full extension with built in Blum motion. The are also available in 3/4 extension and full extension without Blum motion.

These are called locking devices. They are the only thing that actually attachés to the drawer boxes.

This is a factory jig with drill bits that I highly recommend.



Next post we will modify the drawer boxes and start installing hardware.

We have to make 2 notches in the back of the drawers for the glides.

Only the square portion needs to come out but to make it easier to cut with the jig saw I added the curve.

Next we use the jig to drill this 5 mm hole.

Now we flip the jig and drill 2 holes for the locking device.

This showes the locking device screwed down and the 5 mm hole in the back. These steps are repeated on the other side of the drawer.



Next we will install the glides in the cabinet.

The first step is to build out for the glides.

These will be flush inset drawers and doors. I am determining the distance for the screw.

After marking the distance with my square I screw the glide in place. Notice that I have made a ledge on the build out block to support the glide while attaching it.

This little stub that my pencil is pointing to goes into the 5 mm hole in the back of the drawer.

Now just slide the drawer onto the glides until the locking devices lock into place. This picture was taken while laying on the floor and shooting the bottom of the drawer.

I like the clean look of these hidden glides especially with dovetailed drawers.

To remove the drawer from the cabinet just reach under and squeeze the locking devices and pull the drawer out.
