Any body ever turn a baseball bat on SS?

Post by navycop »

I see thread of turning pens. What about baseball bats? What is the secret to the tapered handle?

Here's a start! http://www.shopsmith.net/forums/showthr ... light=bats

If you do a search for bats you get a lot of threads.

The biggest problem turning a bat is the distance between the headstock and the tailstock. Every bat I have tried was just fractions of an inch to long. I had a friend that always wanted his bat handle turned down. I could usually get them in the SS but it required setting the drive center and the playing games with the tailstock to get it to fit.

As for turning the taper it is fairly easy just set you depth with caliber or wrench that is correct size and then using some as a straight edge make a uniform taper. You can turn it fairly easily.

It didn't occur to me to search the forums for baseball bats.
