Thought you might like to see this engineering masterpiece up close. The guy who designed this thing was a genius. You realize this when you look down at the pile of pieces after not seeing them for a while and have to reassemble it. It's like a puzzle. Incredible mechanical design, and cheap to produce.

I sure am getting tired of looking at my ugly avatar!!! I thought that by replacing my fully restored Mark 5 headstock avatar with this UGLY unrestored ER10 headstock avatar that it would make the my restoration process go quicker.......it hasn't.
Bought this rust bucket April 17, 2009 while still in the process of finishing up my Greenie. Officially started this ER10 restoration on June 3, 2009. Now, 2 months later, it's still in pieces on my floor. That doesn't mean it hasn't seen a lot of love though. It's just been a slooooow relationship. Just hasn't been enough hours in the day for a month now.
Just to show you that I AM making some progress, I've been doing a lot of this.....

and with an awesome Skype PC to PC training session with tom_k/mo in Missouri and me in San Diego, I've learned how to create artwork in a "Vector" based software package so that I can recreate my motor nameplate by using this........

and finally, some hands on planer work with sdssmith trying to bring these back to life..........

OOPS, no after shots with me....I'll post later. Sorry for the tease.

Mike,
Was the motor nameplate one that you created or the one done by keelan over at OWWM? It looks great who ever did it.

Ahhhhhh, so your a forum hopper too, ey?
The nameplate artwork that you saw in post #132 WAS created by keelan from the Old Wood Working Machine forum. I posted from work and didn't have the electronic file I created on my computer. (like I also didn't have the planed bench board photos). keelan is a great guy. He was real excited to help me out. Very talented guy and anally picky...just like me!! The artwork he created is a positive image which will be used to produce a water slide decal. (like those used on models)
Here's the artwork that I am working on.

You'll notice that mine is a negative image since I am going to use the chemical etch process on a piece of brass (to match the ER's ShopSmith logo plate I'm also working on). On my artwork, what is white gets etched out in the process and the black (aka the mask) remains untouched.
Notice the red arrow? Well I can't believe it but that is where I am STUCK trying to figure out how to add that last bit of black directly in that area and the other three areas where you see the yellowish circles. (see what I mean about annally picky?) Seems like it would be a simple task after seeing what's done already but believe me, this vector based software is s whole different beast to master. I may have to get assistance from my tutor, tom_k/mo. I think I need to figure out how to use a tool called "Bezier curve" but it's making my head spin trying to figure it out.
Here's the photos of the bench boards after planing. This is still work inprocess. They still need to be sanded and bleached to get the black water staining out. The planing really needed to be done because the unit sat out in the weather so long, causing the grain to be raised quite a bit. I just didn't like the looks of them. Thanks again to sdssmith for doing the planing for me. It was a ShopSmith planer of course. (man, this guy has some REALLY NICE toys!!!!)

Can you open the attached in your vector software? It wasn't asked for, and I don't mean to impede your learning graphics software. Just had some downtime waiting for 5:00...

Bought, restored and sold a 520 before I knew what I had (and should have kept) - Now I found religion and I'm working on restoring a 500 and a 10E.

Hammered Maroon would be a NEW example! OR how about rust colored!:D You would only need to paint it once - Forever! How about day-glo orange or yellow? I have not seen a Green one!
If you cannot make up your mind, paint each piece a different color!
If you want to HIDE it; Camophlage(sic) it!
How about what ever is on sale this week?
Whatever you decide I am sure it will look fantastic!
