Thanks for confirming that part, I'll order it tomorrow, as well as the power coupler that I am missing for the bandsaw!

As far as tube refurbishing supplies, I just came back from shopping at two big box hardware stores (HD and RONA) and neither had 1" ABS. So I got a single 2" ABS and will clean the tubes individually, using the gallon of Evaporust which I also bought today. Finally got a 3/32" wrench and removed the speed adjuster. The only thing left in the casing is the quill advance/lock shaft and levers, which I"ll probably remove as well to give the whole case a good cleaning and re-painting.

Could not find suitably-sized expansion/freeze/test plugs, so that will go to another day and another store...

Whew, getting hot here, first time in the Summer! Time to put the SS project on hold for a few days...

Why "abs"? PVC DWV will do! I mispoke re inside pipe. 3/4" is the size needed(the endcaps are the limiting piece).

Sorry, I was typing the message hurriedly and had a brain cramp. Indeed, it's PVC tubing I bought, not "ABS" (whatever THAT might be... :-)
I'll go to a plumbing specialty store, which will likely have a bigger selection of PVC than the big box stores (who didn't have anything less than 2" i.d.)
I might also find the right size rubber plugs there, for turning with a drill. The ones at HD were too big.

You need to be looking in an auto parts store for the 'tube chuck'(aka freeze/core plug)..

I like to prime both the inside and outside of the headstock casing and underneath all the tables with GraySelf Etch Primer Aerosol 16 oz

I like the finish it leaves under the tables and inside the headstock.

ABS and PVC are different. For the purpose intended here it does not matter. The pcv is 'white', cpvc is cream colored. For future reference citrustrip is an excellent paint remover(works over night) that is non toxic. strip/prime/paint achieves real good results.

Through this SS work I'm finding out a lot of things (PVC vs ABS, evaporust, citrustrip, greyself, etc.). Great learning experience all around!! Thanks again to all.

Thanks for the tip about using the paperclip! I wasn't using it right, and indeed now realize it was making it arduous for readers to see my pics. I'll try it again here.

Evaporust has removed most of the rust off my top tubes (solution is getting pretty black so likely won't do too well on the lower tubes, unless I buy another gallon...).

I had bought a selection of sandpapers

I inserted the pipe in the vise, protected by a rag, and proceeded to hand-sandpaper them in a rotating fashion, first by grabbing the sandpaper in one hand, clasping the tube firmly, and scrubbing vigorously in a circular motion around the tube, up and down the rusty areas. Then grabbing the sandpaper ends and going at it like shining a shoe, back and forth, letting the paper glide over the tube and doing the fine sanding. Turning the tube over to do the bottom. Going from coarser to finer paper. One of the muscles in my forearm was starting to cramp up so I took a break.

You can see the final result after using 400 grit (the one on the left was done to 400, and the one in the vice is just starting to be sanded):

I wish I had the right attachment to do the final drill-based polishing, but you know what, I think this is plenty good for my need! With some paste wax this will look good, and allow the headstock to glide easily across it. So on to the other aspects of my "fixing up" this neglected Shopsmith.
