Has any tried turning the puzzle piece pens?

Welcome woodshaper. I would be interested in knowing how to turn using sandpaper. I want to get into pen turning, but I cann't afford the chisel yet.
Mark V 520, Ryobi 12" mitersaw, Delta 10" tablesaw, DC 3300.

You can turn pens with standard chisels.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

I know I don't need pen chisels, but I don't have any chisels. I do have plenty of sandpaper...

Sand paper finish only works if the piece is allready round and close to the bushing size, the stars and stripes pen is already round so it was easy to sand to the bushings, most other pens use square blanks but there are round one that might work for you.
