Chuck indexing attachment

Post by rdewinter »

What is an indexing attachment that comes with the Baracuda 2 T/N chuck?
What does it do? Can someone explain please. A picture would also be good so I can see the setup and/or action.

the Teknatool Nova SuperNova2 chuck has a similar indexing feature (although the number of holes may differ). the teknatool website pictures do not show up well for me, but here is a review that has a good pic of the backplate in the last picture in the right column:
http://onlinetoolreviews.com/reviews/te ... rnova2.htm

by setting up a jig with a pin that slides into the indexing hole, you can fix the spindle in one position and use hand tools or routers to carve the item in the chuck. then you move the pin to a different hole and repeat the process until you have gone all the way around. the supernova2 chuck has 24 holes so you can have patterns that have 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, or 24 steps in the pattern.

the PSI write-up doesn't say how many holes there are in the Barracuda backing plate. some of the other members have and like this chuck so I expect one of them will give you a better answer.

Hi Bob - Turn in your hymnal (Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone - PTWFE) to page 153-155, and you'll see how to make an indexing attachment along with an additional jig plus a couple of basic uses for it. You might be able to adapt the idea to work with the PSI device.

FWIW - There have been several versions of PTWFE over the years and the PAGES are not always numbered the same. A chapter reference (and USUALLY a pix number) provides a 'better' reference.

A reference to the online version is also exact since we all would be looking at the same 'version'.:)

Please excuse me for not thinking of that.
