What Glue To Use

Post by midkid »

I plan to build some small lined jewlery boxes. Can anyone tell me what is the best glue to use to attach the felt or velvet lineing?

Hi MIDKID,
You may want to try Elmer's spray-on adhesive made for applying felt. It doesn't bleed through the material. It's available at Lowe's or Home Depot in the paint dept. Cut your felt to rough size, spray the back and apply. Overlap the area and trim with an Exacto knife as it allows you to get closer to the edge. Use a popsicle stick to push it into the corners. Remember that felt stretches a "bit". Enjoy your woodworking!

What Glue To Use?

Thanks for the advice, I was worried about the glue bleeding through the fabric. This sounds like the perfect solution. Thanks again for your quick responce.:)

hi Midkid, I tried using glue and felt on a box and didn't like it.
Now I use Soft Flock by Plaid. You can get it at Hobby Lobby
for six bucks. It's available in several different colors. IMHO,it's
much easier to use than felt and glue. Good luck. Norm in Co.:)

If you think you might want to remove the felt at some time, you might want to consider what is called in the trade "Hot Glue" or animal glue. It comes as granules and is mixed with hot water which you can keep to temperature using a heatable glue pot. Whatever you do, don't let it boil.
I use this glue all the time on pipe organs particularly for the felt and leather parts, as it sets quickly and is easily parted using a hot knife. It won't bleed through of you don't soak the felt. Best to apply a thin coating to the wood only.

Alan.
