I like the design. The column would be a nice feature, but you may have to get the display cabinet done in order to decide if it's "right" or not.
It's good your on top of the heat thing. A friend has a 46" LCD in her family room. I was surprised to see 4 cooling fans on the backside near the top.

Gettin better
I am slowly improving my drawing skills. This display cabinet sets to the right of the entertainment center that I posted last week.

Now we've got something to work with.
It's tough to judge, but I would suggest that the pillar and corresponding filler below be raised panel, if they are large enough. The break in symmetry(sp?) doesn't look right.
Also, the video cabinet doors should be of either a black or frosted glass to kind of match up everything if the rails and styles are strong enough to support that.
That's my 2 cents worth, for what it's worth.

I'm a little late to the party, but I went through the first two lessons last night. Although I was already familiar with the basic tools and their behavior from previous attempts at just playing around with Sketchup, the lessons really taught me important processes and how to use Sketchup effectively. I'm looking forward to continuing the lessons. GREAT JOB!

Tom, I just worked through lesson 3 and I have a couple of questions.
1) After using the "follow me" tool, the rounded edge of the top now has a ton of little lines. Why does mine have those and yours didn't?
2) After recombining the two halves of the top, when I viewed the "C" scene, the length dimension is now showing 6-1/2" instead of 13". I tried to recreate that dimension, but because of the curved edge, I can't get it right. What am I doing wrong?
Are there any more lessons coming? Are you going to talk about components in any future lesson?

Using what I've learned so far, I put together a rough model of the display case I'm going to build for my dad's Marine Corps medals. Dimensions are just a guestimate at this stage. I haven't yet collected everything and laid it all out to see what size the box needs to be.

Although I showed the glass front, I didn't show how it would actually be installed. The plan is to install it like a drawer bottom with the glass fitting in a saw kerf in all 4 sides.
One thing I couldn't figure out how to do was to round over the edges of the fingers and the square plugs. Using the "Follow Me" tool resulted in some really weird things happening.

I found those images on the web, saved them to my computer, then in Sketchup went to File -> Import and loaded them into the drawing. I could have taken more time and edited the images to have a transparent background instead of a white background, but I was getting pretty tired at that point last night.mbcabinetmaker wrote:Heath I am impressed! How did you get the pictures and medals into the drawing?
