SS Planer blade question
Moderator: admin
Just need to tilt the table 2 1/2 degrees to the left. (toward the conical disk)
Edit:
Oh, My Goodness!! This is completely wrong!! Don't do it!
Don't know what I was drinking (or smoking) when I wrote this, but it must have put me in a dangerous condition! I have to wonder if no one read this post - or if you-all have been polite enough to not nail me to the post!
Any tilt toward the left would give a steeper angle on the blade - not a shallower one. I will post a correction!

SS Planer blade Question
Can I tilt the 510 table right 7 degrees and use the Planer/Joiner Knife Sharpener to get 38 degree for sharpen planer and joiner knives. I had seen other woodworkers recommend 41 degrees as a compromise over the many past years. The 45 degrees seems to work good for joiner knives I have sharpen. I did find a set of joiner knives that must have been sharpen around 38 degrees cause when I did them at 45 degrees, I could only do about 1/2 of the knive edge without really cutting too much off the knive edges. Thanks.

You're right. But I want to take this opportunity to pass on a tip to Alec, since he is probably on his way to a sharpening service with the old wedge-shaped blades that he can use: Have your sharpener regrind the blades at 37-1/2 degrees. The blades come to us here at Shopsmith at a standard 45 degrees. Jim Shupert, my sharpener, convinced me to try the 37-1/2-degree angle when I took a set of worn knives to him. He said I'd get a smoother cut with less tear-out -- and I did! Works for the jointer, too. The steeper angle won't stay sharp as long, but I think the increased quality of the cut is worth the hassel of changing blades every four months instead of every six.
With all good wishes,
Table tilt correction
Earlier, I had posted a note that suggested a tilt of the table toward the left (toward the disk) to lessen the angle of the blade. As this is completely the wrong direction to lessen the sharpening angle - thought it necessary to post this correction.
Sorry about the previous post!
(Mirror immage syndrome and bad math) Really! I wasn't smoking any funny stuff!
The standard table position when using the Planer/Joiner Knife Sharpener is FLAT (zero degrees tilt). If one wants to lessen the angle of sharpening such as changing from 45 deg. to 37 1/2 degrees - the table must be tilted to the right.
As for my personal sharpening - I think I'll ease into any lesser angles. Like first trying out an angle of about 40 deg. Don't know if that will make jointer operations smoother, but it's worth a try.
