Lathe Chisel Cradle

In oen of Nick Engler's early videos, he demonstrates the lathe capabilities of the Shopsmith. In the video, he has a "cradle" that appears to hold about 5 chisels in an upright position. The "cradle" hangs on the upper way tubes.

Does anyone have the plans for this "cradle".

I cant say for sure but I thought he had the plans for that on the blackboard my internet access is too slow to to watch video anymore so I don't remember which session it was I am sure someone will come back with the right answer.

I made this a couple of weeks ago, and I think it is the first project I finished using my Shopsmith. I had a 3 inch board with a bunch of 1 1/2" holes drilled in it to make wheels for a toy. I decided to use that board to store my chisels.

When I am not using the chisels, they hang on a hook from the basement rafters.

I just lean the caddy against the Shopsmith leg when I am turning. It would be easy to put a hook on it so it could hang from the tubes. The holes are not placed symmetrically because this was the left over board from the toy wheels. When I was drilling the wheels, I wanted to avoid the knot.

Here is a close up of the base where the chisel blades rest. I am a little concerned that this could lead to rusting of the blades. Does anyone have any experience with this?

The bottom is a 2 X 3 and the two side boards were ripped from the same 2 X 3. A Shopsmith router bit was used to cut the holes for the chisel blades, but I might just use a drill and chisel if I make another one. The handle was turned from 1 1/2 inch stock.

Thanks Tim. I made another one tonight for the eight chisels that came with my Greenie. They aren't as nice as the Shopsmith chisels, but there are several that are different enough from the Shopsmith chisels that it is nice to have a second set.

About the rust question...As long as the chisels are kept indoors, probably knot a problem, but you could put a finish on the rack (if you haven't already), to ensure that the chisels are not exposed to moisture from the wood.

My solution is not so elegant, what I use is a long magnet, the bar type used to mount on a wall and hand screwdrivers etc from, I lay it on the way tube at the back of the lathe, and line up the tools i'll be using, the ones i use the most closest to me, and then spread out from there. When I'm done turning, it's easy to just lift the magnets and tools, and I can easily put them away, hanging the whole setup on a couple of wall mounted hooks. That's my two cents worth.

I saw one like this at a demo several years ago. Whipped one together from some plywood drops. I can hang it from the tubes, or it will sit on the bench / table.

The cradle in your photo looks like the one in Nick's video. By chance, do you happen to have a drawing with the measurements?

Took a few measurements...
I made this from sight & my chisel set. You might change dims if you see fit.
Used 1/2 inch dowels.
