Welcome Honeywell! You are right, if silly questions got you thrown off the forum, I'd have been gone long ago!

I think we all understand that questions are the way we grow. The reason these folks help is that they love the woodworking, and want to see others succeed.

I did not put any sealer on the cooler. Maybe I should have? I'm a newbie at this stuff too.

As for the height, I don't recall. Somewhere around "waist high." I don't think I used a tape measure on the whole project. For instance, to "measure" the height, I stood up one of the leg boards, put my thumb where I thought would be a comfortable overall height, eyeball estimated the thickness of the lid and marked a line where the bottom of the lid would be. Then set a stop block on the table saw so I could cut "pretty close" to that mark. The main thing wasn't the exact length measurement, but that all of the leg boards were the exact length. So the stop block gave me the consistency and repeatability I needed even though the length wasn't a precise measurement.

Would a regular tote work? The kind you use to store Christmas decorations in. There are currently no stores that sell coolers in Ohio this time of year. I wanted to get started building one for my buudy who is an EMT/Firefighter. I am ordering an EMS bottle opener. Then I was going to put an EMS shield sticker on the front. Maybe shallac or Thomson waterseal over it. The weather in OH can be brutal..

I don't think you'd want to use a plastic tote. That wouldn't offer much insulation for a cooler and I don't know how durable that would be. Do you have a sporting goods store? Bass Pro Shops, Academy Sporting Goods, Cabela's, Dicks Sporting Goods, or something like that? They should carry coolers year round.

Why not use a plastic tote, but surround it with rigid insulation. Build your box big enough to house that.

Make sure there's a way to drain the water out of the tote.
