speed changer question
Well I have completed the cleanup of the ER.
Can someone explain just how the speed changer works.
The motor spins at 3600rpm. If I put the long belt in front small pully, and on the front of the 2 speed pullys. Then put the short belt on the back speed pully and on the large pully space on the head stock pully, how then does the speed change.
If I crank the handle one way, one belt get loose and the other tight. If I go in the opposite direction, then the the other belt gets tight, and the other loose.
How does this change the speed of the shaft in the headstock.
Hopefully I have explained myself well enough for you to understand.
Thanks very much
Terry

Hopefully I can explain. The pulley that both belts attach to has a center 'floating sheave'. As the handle gets cranked while the motor is turning, it causes the center section 'floating sheave' to slide back or forth on it's mating shaft, in turn, causing the width between the V to change. As it moves one way, one side gets wider while the other side gets narrower. This causes 1 belt to ride higher in the pulley and the other to ride lower. You should be able to see the center sheave slide back and forth as you turn the handle with the motor running. If you can't, there is an issue that you need to get fixed.terry glenn wrote:Well I have completed the cleanup of the ER.

If my explanation isn't clear, or if you can't see the center sheave move when you turn the handle with the motor running, post your situation and we'll take it to the next step.

Terry, does the center sheave of your speedchanger pulley move? It should slide back and forth.terry glenn wrote:Well I have completed the cleanup of the ER.

WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING, when you crank the speedchanger handle, the center pulley will go up or down. When it does, again WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING, the center sheave will shift side to side, and, the 2 belts will have larger or smaller pulleys to run on.
When you crank the center pulley down, the belt from the upper pulleywill tighten on the center pulley, and go closer to the center. At the same time, the lower belt center pulley will get larger. Both of those changes working together, will change the speed of the upper pulley. Cranking the center pulley up, will have the opposite effect.
Again, have the motor running, before you touch that handle. (If you want, you can UNPLUG the unit, attach a sanding disc, and turn the whole thing by hand.)
If you don't have the belts moving before you turn the speedchanger crank, you'll most likely break off one of the ears, on the speedchanger. Yes, one of mine is welded up. No, I got it that way.

you need to follow up and find one of the Speed changer trouble shooting sheets and the directions, they are posted several places. If you cannot find them Email me and I will send you the files for you to use. Like was said you have to make sure the center pulley is free and slides. also onthe speed changer directions it will tell you how to set the pulleys high end or slow speed.

speed changer
Thank you all for the info.
I am not sure, as the pulley seems to move, but not a lot.
Bill thanks for the offer, I have sent you a request .
I will keep you posted.
Does any one know how to shrink a jpg file, the forum says that my files are too big, as I wanted to send a pic of the completed machine.

1) The upper cone pulley(on the headstock shaft) should be mounted with the large(4") pulley towards the headstock.
2) The lower cone pulley(on the motor shaft) should be mounted with the large(4") pulley towards the motor(this is opposite of the 'normal' single belt mounting).
3) The longer belt is always mounted to the larger cone pulley(headstock shaft for slow speed range and the motor for high speed range). The shorter belt is always mounted to the smaller pulley on the other shaft.
4) The motor speed is 1750 rpm(my motor/manual anyway).
