dado blade on the cheap

I need to make sure I am interpreting this correctly. This is this saying you can stack sawblades and spacers between to make a dado equivalent?

Absolutely. They are marketed this way, called a "stacked dato blade set".

I think we all know that a "stacked dado set" is a little bit different than a stack of common saw blades and that the results may or may not be comparable.

Even with a stacked dado set, some care is required to get proper dadoes.

Please notice the discussion about how the teeth on adjacent blades should NOT contact one another. To allow this to happen can cause damage to the teeth and may create a hazard condition is carbide should chip and fly.

Good finds. I found the discussion on the everyday woodworker most informative. I'm kind of mad I never thought of this when I was still using my saw to cut dados (I now only use my router).

I never liked Dado setups in any shape form or fashion, too much fiddling around for me. I like being able to mount a bit and cut a dado exactly the size I want. Of course I have to have the "size I want bit" or change the size I want.

I have the 8" version for my cabinet saw and like it very much.

I use a slightly different Freud set and I too am very pleased.

Every time I read a post or discussion regarding stacked Dado sets my mind returns to a set purchased from Sears some 35 or 40 years ago. The quality was terrific. They worked perfectly every time I needed them. Six or seven years ago my son paid us a visit to assist his Mother and I as I was recovering from a joint replacement surgery. While here he spent several hours in my shop repairing some parts for his car. After he left and my recovery allowed I cleaned up the shop and discovered he had used two of the stack-able blades for some purpose other than what they were intended. Both were bent and had hammer marks on them. No I have never attempted to use them again nor have I discarded them. The two sets I purchased trying to replace them don't come close to the quality of the original set. Am I upset with my son? Heck no, how many young people put their own lives on hold to help a family member. Besides he will inherit my tools one day and can figure out what to do with them:D Jim

i guess i started something,,,,her is what i want out of a dado,, square corners and dead nuts flat corner to corner,, (i make half lap miter joints)
i use a ryobi radial arm ,, only reason i keep the ryobi (junk) is the horizontal router chuck opposite the blade,,,,,sosme one mentioned weight,, next time i take the blades off ill weigh them 7 1/4 thincut 6 blades vs 8 in dado and chippers,,,methinks this is gonna be very close,,, im under ten beans for the entire stack,,,lol lotsa beans to buy wood to make sawdust,,,,indianabob grower of fine weeds and a few hosta,,, life is good

Just my opinion, but I would think it would be cheaper to buy a good set of dado blades than pay for a stay in the hospital or morgue from using a jakeleg setup just to save a couple of bucks.
