This makes it easier to install and you don't have to have it hanging from the tubes all the time if you are worried about the weight on the castors.

I cannot begin to tell you guys how much I appreciate your quick response to my note. I knew someone with a Shopsmith must have some ancient/dusty past issues of Hands On. Now I can begin my next project. The original one that I had turned out to be very functional. Plus, it kept a myraid number of parts within easy reach but out of sight (and relatively dust free). Thank you very much.

I wonder if all that weight hanging from the tubes does not over stress the Mark 5 casters. I would rather go for "its own casters option". Also with the cabinet hanging the Mark 5 should be difficult to move maneuver.

I am planning on making one but not the hanging type.

I have had that cabinet hanging from my 1981 Mark V for 25 years and it works fine. If the cabinet is constructed correctly, when you drop the castors the cabinet rests on the floor so the only time there is stress on the castors is when they are in the roll position.

Just curious - has anyone adapted the plans mentioned to something that makes sense for a shorty or mini?

I made a Sketchup version with the long shelf lowered an inch and the back doors replaced with pegboard. Maybe someone could use this as a starting point for a mini or shorty adaptation. To use this file in Sketchup right click on the link, choose "Save Link As...", replace the file extension .zip with .skp and save the file to your folder where you store Sketchup projects. Back in the early '80s I made this cabinet for my SS. It was fine, my SS basicly stayed put.

Fast forward to 2009

I made a new one for my "new older SS"

and I find myself moving the SS from it's place in the rear of the shop out to the front (to watch the dogs and get some air). With so much moving I have removed the bench tube holder and now I just slide it in and out of place.

Thanks, after Tom's Sketchup 101 lessons I needed something to apply them on. I am planning on building this one and thought that building it in Sketchup first would be like a trial run. I could check my layout and dimensions without wasting wood if I messed up the measurements. I could still mess up cutting something, but it would take the first round of errors out.

In anticipation of making my storage cabinet, I changed the casters to the “new and improved” ones.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! I wish I had changed them as soon as the new ones came out. The SS almost moves by itself. If anyone is thinking of getting them, I say DO IT.

Here is my take on it. With my instructable pdf plans. I liked the option of removing the hangers if I ever want to use it without the shopsmith over it.
