Thank you for all of the info Paul, were you a complete CNC novice when you started this process? I have experience in CNC's, but it has been over 10 years. I actually programed by writing G-code along time ago. I really did not realize that these kinds of options existed until you started this thread.

I've a very wide base of experience in electronics --including computers, stepper motors, and power supplies -- and embedded software systems as I worked in both electronics technology and software engineering for over two decades.

However I knew nothing about CNC machines or software prior to buying my Bluumax machine and embarking down a road of new knowledge.

All this thinking and posting about my CNC pushed me over the edge & I just ordered a 36x24x4 (x/y/z) 8020 aluminum-based machine with the highly regarded Gecko 540 drive electronics.
The machine I bought is the FLA100 from http://www.finelineautomation.com
