Strip Sander differences? Sharpening Attachment

Hi,

I have a strip sander (555309)(older one) which I use with the Chisel Sharping Attachment (555812). When I first put them together I noticed a slight misalignment of the "cup" holes and the center of the platen. I had to shift the holes to the left to get them center which I did by finding the right thickness washer in my collection and adding it between the support angle and the arm. While it works fine this way I have always wondered why the misalignment.

I have a second strip sander which I use as a sander only and today I was doing a little light clean up which included the sander. I took the top off and then started thinking about the observed differences/vintages we here on the forum have found. So when I looked at how things mount over on that side I found what might be another difference.

Before I go on initial machine I have I will refer to #1 the second as machine as #2. It is also possible that the parts on #2 have been redone by a previous owner.

This is #1, note trunnion guide and spacers hardware.

#2 has no spacers and has button heads rather then socket head.

When #1 has the attachment added the spacing will be different left to right then when #2 has it mounted. First picture is #1 the second is #2.

So out of interest what does your sander look like in this area?

The single manual I have shows spacers and button head fasteners...

I believe that both machines are pre 2001, machine #2 has no date stamp but lacks the holes for the shield so that is what I'm going by saying pre 2001.

My 1992 vintage strip sander is like machine #1.

My 121192 = #1. #2 does not fit the attachment well!

Well I guess we don't have a large enough sample size to say if my second sander is made the way it designed or if someone has modified it. When I get some time I'll check how the normal table mounts and see if it might work better with spacers and different screw heads.

Has anyone else checked the location of the platen and the "cup" holder to see if they are line up right? Not that it would seem to be that critical with longer lathe tools.

Ed,

Mine isn't that old. I have a 555309 serial 08-04-08 that is like #1.
I do have some alignment issues as well. The center of the cup aligns pretty well with the center of the wheels, my trouble is with the platen.

It appears that the attach point for the platen should have been milled in a manner similar to the adjacent attach point for the idler wheel.

As configured the platen is too far to the left. If I remember correctly my dad bought his sander about a year later, his has the identical problem.
Is your sander the same?

I would bet on owner modification or reassembly error. You might look the unit over and see if you can find the socket head screws somewhere else on the machine (maybe even the spacers]

My Strip Sander, born 9-2-2009 (still brand new) is configured just like Ed's #1. Both table and sharpening attachment line up very well.

Hi,

I see some over spray gray paint evidence so I have a feeling it was apart. I think you are correct about the parts issues. My next step will be to take the "good" one apart and measure the spacers and see if I have any that match. The screws unless they are somewhere else on the machine I will have to shop for.

At least I think I understand what is going now at least.
