speed for the thickness planer

I have looked through the manual and cannot find what setting the headstock should be set to when using the 12" planer - anyone can help?

Set it to 'T', 4140 rpm from PTWFE.

Depends on your depth of cut, the width of your board, and the hardness of the wood. For a medium hardness, 3-6" board, 1/16" cut, use "S." Adjust from there. Harder board, use "P." Softer board, use "T." Deeper cut, use "R." Shallower cut, use "T." Wider board, use "R" or "P." Narrower board use "T." Don't go any faster than "T." The manual has a pretty detailed table... mine is on page 40, under "Operations," called the "Speed and Feed Chart." if you have a specific combination you have a question about, let me know, and I'll post the SS speed and the feed speed.

my manual has - setup - alignment and adjustment - utilisation/operation - maintenance up to page 13 , then 2 pages of parts list, then another doc " 12" power feed thickness planer" with adendums to the first manual with 6 pages and another doc for the dust chute. there are no speeds - it is for the 505990 - b canadian if theres a difference - i would appreciate if you could post the speed chart

I think you will find the info you need in the Book. "Power Tool Woodworking For Everyone" This book is still sold by Shopsmith and available to read also on-line.
This book came with every new shopsmith sold.

cincinatti - i am waiting for my copy of PTWE that i bought on ebay from the USA for 2 months - so I guess I will have to wait for it to get here to answer all my questions;)

I need to do some work now so will check the online version

I purchased my Shopsmith planer in 1985. At that time the planer was only available as a MK V mount. (This planer is now on it's own power stand and is still hummin away almost every day - one of the most maintenance free products I've ever purchased.)

When mounted on the Shopsmith, I noticed that in prolonged heavy use, like planing hard maple, the top of the headstock became uncomfortably hot. This may be something that you will want to watch out for.

I never regretted buying the separate power stand.
