Neglected Mark V 1981

I bought a used Mark V, and I'm afraid I bought someone else's problems. The Mark V was bought from an estate sale. After buying the SS, the owner's son, said his Dad was not good at woodworking and hardly used the Shopsmith.
I should have taken my money back. Now that it's in my garage, I found out many items are missing. I did pay a discounted price, so I don't mind buying the parts I need.
The first problem, is removing the saw blade. I see the set screw for the arbor is missing, but the nut on the arbor is super tight. How do I remove the arbor from the headstock? It looks like a knurled nut, holding the arbor, is this the right kind of nut? Do I remove this nut? It too is super tight.
Also, the Mark V came with an owners manual, but it is only a few pages. I need more details. Where can I get a detailed owners manual? I believe this machine needs a few adjustments.

Is the problem getting the arbor off the shaft or getting the nut off the arbor. Just in case you don't know, the arbor nut is a reverse thread. You may be trying to tighten rather than remove that nut.

Soak the arbor down with a penetrating oil, see if that will loosen it up.

Since the arbor set screw is missing, the arbor is either either frozen due to corrosion OR burrs. You may want to try gently prying off the arbor by placing 2 screw drivers 180° apart between the knurled part and the arbor. If it moves, use your judgment and see if you can get if off all the way. If it doesn't, go with beeg's suggestion first.

That did it. Left handed thread, and the two screwdrivers did the trick.

I found the website for the two bearing quill, thanks. I also found a thread on here for a detailed exploded view of the headstock. I think that's going to come in handy.

I'm missing the drill chuck, and parts for the laithe. Any suggestions?

The saw blade looks like it's a little burned. Are the saw blades unique to Shopsmith?

yes and no. check the size of the arbor, shopsmith' s arbor is 1 1/4 . but there is one for normal everyday blades a 5/8's arbor. have faith you have come to the best place for advice on the ss mk v . hagd jim

Is the blade burned or is it a build up of pitch? The saw blades depend upon the arbors ya have. The 1 1/4 or the 5/8's.

Papajim: In case you had not noticed, we like pictures. They are far more accurate in describing a 'condition' than mere words. Fortunately you accurately described the 'knurled' collar so you could be forewarned to NOT remove it.

Chucks are quite often found on e-bay. I recommend the older jacobs 3326 or jacobs multi-chuck.

P.S. Have you 'discovered' these?
