what four jaw lathe chuck?

i'm wondering what four jaw chuck ya'll have had good luck with mating with the ShopSmith??

Hello Bill, I use the Talon chuck and have had good results with it. I have a friend that uses the Nova chuck which is a littler lower in price and he is happy with that. I purchased mine from Shopsmith and it came with the 5/8" adapter which is needed for use on the Shopsmith. Looks like the same chuck at Woodcraft with an adapter is around the same price.

Pen state
sells an adaptor for the shopsmith. with that adaptor you can find any chuck the uses a 1x8 thread. It opens up the hole world of possibilitys.

By the way there chucks are also pretty good.

I have a Nova mini, purchased just as they were transitioning to China. For a while it was possible to dig through old stock and get the earlier stuff. It is a fine chuck and unlike some, I don't find the tommy bars to be a problem.

My dad and I took a turning class at Highland, the instructor recommended the Oneway Talon as it will handle most anything and is about six pounds lighter than the Stronghold. (saves bearing wear and tear) When Home Depot had the great sale I did a Stronghold but so far haven't really needed it.

The Oneway chucks are great and while the Nova products may still be good, I am extremely frustrated with Chinese made products. Even if it may be possible to get something decent, it can't be done consistently and you have to be ever watchful.

Some of the adapters use a set screw with a cup point. The Shopsmith adapters and arbors use a set screw with a smooth, flat point. You may wish to replace such set screws with one from the Help kit, to avoid chewing up the spindle.

Orrr grind the point flat. All that is needed is a (1)Shopsmith, (2)a sanding disk, (3)a 'ss (long 5/32" allen wrench) tool kit' and (4)a mitergauge(assumes a 5/32" socket set screw[as above])

Also a source if yer help kit pantry is depleted.
