drive shaft removal

Post by aloneryd »

I have a greenie. I removed the quill,no problem, but after taking out the snap ring ,I can't get the drive assy. to pull out of the headstock. I tried to do as ernie says in the sawdust video, but it seems too tight, any suggestions ,would help . I tried tapping from the inside, but still no movement. Help. Thanks

First ? is whether you are removing it to inspect it or to replace the bearings.

If replacement is not the primary objective, then you must avoid any undue pressure on the bearing races.

It is the outer race that is 'stuck' in the casting. Therefore any force(tapping) needs to be applied to the outer race ONLY. This can be accomplished with a tube(pipe?) of a size that will push against the outer race only when inserted from the quill bore. It is imperative the end be 'square' or it may cock the bearings in the headstock. Be advised there is a second retaining 'ring' on the inner end of the inner bearing.

'Tapping' is the critical action word here. Proper direction is a close second.

I had a large dowel that was about 18" long but not as large in diameter. I used the dowel to give me the reach through the headstock and in so doing was able to tap the drive assembly out.

NOTICE that I said "tap" and not "drive". No big hammer required. Patience and maybe a lot of "TAPPING".

When I did this, I already knew that I had bad bearings so I was not concerned about damage to the bearings but TAP anyhow. Remember, the headstock is cast.

You may have a different Sawdust Session than I have. The narrator in mine is "Nick". The only ernie I know (and watch) live over on Sesame Street.
