Damaged Arbor ??

I have a 5/8" arbor that will not slide all the way onto the shaft. It goes on about 1" and stops solid. All my other arbors slide on normally. This convinces me that there is something wrong with that one arbor.

I completely removed the setscrew. No change. I can slide a 5/8" wooden dowel through the arbor with no unusual binding. I forced a soft rag through the arbor and rolled up a piece of sander and sorta cleaned the arbor but this all did nothing to fix the original problem.

This arbor will not slide onto the shaft of my other Mark V either.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

Is there any sort of taper on the inside of an arbor. I have no tools that will make this measurement.

OBSERVATION: If I try to slide any of my 5/8" arbors onto the drive shaft backwards they will not go on. This implies to me some sort of taper.

Since you referred to sliding a 5/8" dowel through the arbor I assume you are referring to the 1 1/4" saw blade arbor. All of mine will pass a 5/8" shaft(mortise hold down) and will install on the quill either way. One which I know was deformed when I got it is stubborn.

The arbors will collect debris in the end of the bore beyond where the quill shaft normally fits. I would imagine oxidation would also occur. My 'collection' includes brand new ones and my original Goldie arbor. Only the 'deformed' one will not go on normally(backwards).

All my 5/8" saw blade arbors have a blind bore.

I would be looking for a burr etc.

I have not solved my problem but I have become aware that the hole milled in the arbor is NOT the same diameter all the way through.

I got a good look at the bore with a pair of jewelers glasses. There is a ridge. I had both a good arbor and the one that I cannot install with me to look at.

There is a gall in the ill-fitting arbor but nothing that would stop it dead when mounting it.
