Spindle turning question(s)

Is Christmas here yet?:o

The Aspen(South) was too soft for this application. It chipped out and
darkened considerably with application of 'clear' shellac.

The African Blackwood turned really dark with shellac finish.

The White Oak and Black Walnut turned out as expected(finish wise);

I did not achieve my grain orientation to maximize fleck/ray but learned a bunch!

Geez is that African Black wood dense(and oily/dirty). Spindle sanding was not an option since the black debris traveled into the pores of the other species.

Yeah I turned the head insert part too small!:mad:

VERY interesting, creative, artsy project. That came out FANTASTIC!! Just think how long with piece is going to be around for. That was worth the wait to see.

As long as it doesn't split! Those walnut heads have so much 'checking' that I have watched the other two very carefully all this year. I know the 'recipient' will be banging the hades out of this new one! So far CA has been holding. It will be striking stone!

I go through alot of this noxious stuff in the resto shop. I have found a trick to PERMANENT bonds. Wick a drop or two of super thin CA all over both surfaces to be joined. Let it soak in all the way, and it will. Then coat one surface with the medium or thick, and join the pieces. Squeeze out will have to be wiped off quickly, and it will not absorb oil based stain, so sanding it off is needed. While holding the parts together,(hand,clamp,etc.), I give the joint a shot of accellerator, and bang! It's done. If the wood is an oily or waxy species, I wipe down the joint areas with acetone first. I always have debonder around when working with Ca. jimsjinx
