Model 10er

Post by makindust »

I recently acquired this old Shopsmith ( Magna ) from the back of a guys garage. It hasn't been operated in many years and needs much TLC. Lots of rust, some seized shafts and spindle. The serial number of the saw is R31662. Can't find any serial number on the jig saw. Have been cleaning it up and getting things loosened. There is a jigsaw attachment. I'm thinking that there must be something missing where the jig saw sits over the pulleys. There is a hole there that would appear to hold some type of indexing pin. When the motor is turned on, the jig saw vibrates as it is free to bounce since there is nothing holding the back of the jig saw in place. I got this saw with the parts and attachments in an old plastic milk box. Can someone tell me what holds down the back of the jig saw and what that hole is for in the housing just ahead of the spindle pulley? I'm very new to S/S so don't know what all should be there.
I saw where someone on here heads up above the bridge to the U.P. I lived near Marquette for three and a half years. ( KI Sawyer ) Waaaay Toooo Cooooldd. Now its the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Much milder. See some snow every few years.
Any help/pointers will be much appreciated.

Hi Dean,

The 10ER jigsaw was originally supplied with a long mounting bolt that passed through the jigsaw body into the threaded hole at the back-top of the headstock. The threaded hole was also used for mounting the pulley guard.

You might try searching the web for a copy of the 10ER jigsaw owner's manual. Shopsmith might also be able to supply a copy. If you can't find it, I have an original and would be glad to photocopy it for you.

Here's some 10ER resources on the web... The Yahoo Shopsmith10ERusers group would be a great place to ask if you need help with the jigsaw.

Thanks Ray: So that hole is supposed to be threaded? I guess that is my problem - no threads. Just a plain bore hole. Like I said initially, it needs lots of TLC. Maybe I can figure some way to cut some new threads with a bottoming tap.
It would be great to have a copy of an original jig saw manual if it is not toooo inconvenient. I was able to come up with an original copy of the saw itself. Kind of neat. Thanks for the response.

Hi Dean,

I just found the 10ER jigsaw manual online. It's in the Files section of the Yahoo "erdocuments" group. (I knew I had seen it somewhere!) This is an extra unlisted Yahoo group that they created as a repository for ER documents.

Here's a link (you'll need to join the Yahoo group to view files)...
