Jointer and DC

I have an older Jointer I just got it working again and was wondering if the Chip Chute assembly Item #513944 can be retro fit?

Any one done this before?

One other issue with the Jointer. The fence does not stay put and I don't see a way to lock it down. It moves very easily now that I have cleaned off all the rust and gunk. The problem is, it moves too easily. Like as soon as I push against it near the adjuster. Pushing against the fence further away from the adjuster and closer to the cutter it moves less but will still move.

Any Suggestions?

Pull out on the 'knob' and tighten. If it doesn't tighten, the bracket may be bent(common 'issue'). Oh! or a pin is missing.

The 'knob' tightens the fence angle when pushed in, and the horizontal position when pulled out.

The 'knob' is not to be confused with the infeed height adjusting knob.

As I unnerstan it, the retro kit fits all!

If the fence is sliding on the fence bar I would make sure that the pin (part number 46) is still there. It is this pin that contacts the fence bar and locks the lateral position.

The dust chute retro kit will work on all of the jointers Shopsmith made for the Mark V. I believe that it would also work on the model 4E jointer manufactured for the 10ER.

I had that same problem with an older Shopsmith Jointer. The problem was the Quadrant Assembly. It is numbers 42-44 in the diagram previously posted and is $38.32 (ouch!). Once I purchased a replacement from Shopsmith, it has worked perfectly since.

Ok, I figured it out.

It's a case of operator error. All of the parts are present and nothing is wrong with the jointer. I just didn't grasp the concept of the double nut adjuster. Pull out on the quadrant handle to engage the adjuster that tightens the fence to the rail.

And Here are some pics after cleaning.

Removed the rust first with a green scotch brite pad for the loose stuff, then a baking soda paste and 400 wet sanding for the more stubborn stuff. I used a blow dryer on the cast iron to prevent flash rust. Finished with 2 coats of wax. I use minwax because that is what I have.

Here is the cutter head after cleaning. The entire cutter head was coated in a hard orange rust from many years of inactivity. I'm not sure my dad ever used this tool.

Now to clean up the plate and other cosmetic issues, not to mention my rather beastly Mark 5. Yes it is set at 1/16 because I just had to test it. My strip of hard maple that needed plaining came out really nicely and I now have a functional jointer.
