Mark V Mount Planer outfeed roller issues...

I picked up a M5990 planer on the SS mounting stand this past summer off of a CL ad for $150. I've cleaned/waxed it up, made all the recommended adjustments and added some upgraded parts. The PO or someone else had already upgraded the infeed roller to the serrated version and I added the newer black infeed shield with adjustment holes and all new labels and warnings.

I added the dust chute retro attachment and the lower metal part seems to be rubbing on the outfeed roller such that the chute and connected plexiglass cover are kicked up (not setting in the notch designed for it) on the side opposite the feed motor causing the lower metal part to rub against the feed motor side of the outfeed roller and scrape flakes of the hard rubber off when I am planning. It is acting like a pencil sharpener on the outfeed roller (feed motor side) and scraping off the rubber at an angle.

During my upgrade, I purchased a new outfeed roller but I'm afraid to put it in until I can determine what is causing the lack of clearance between the outfeed roller and the chute assembly which dislodges the chute from its mounting position. Any ideas? Thank you.

I looked at my Pro Planer and the clearance between the metal edge and the outfeed roller is around 1/16". One thought is that the metal edge is not seated all the way on to the plastic dust chute. Otherwise, there just is not much to it.....hang it on rear tiebar and swing it down into place until the locking tabs engage. The metal edge was an upgrade to the original dust chute so you would think the plastic chutes all come from the same mold.

I put the upgrade on my machine and it rubbed on the outside edges of the roller. It was slight enough that I did not notice it. It stayed in place and the little bit of rubber that came off was sucked up by the DC. I discovered the issue only when I opened the door for cleaning. I messed with it and was never able to get it to clear the roller. I looked at everything I could think of as far as how it was mounted ect. There is not much you can do wrong with the mounting. It either is in the right place or not. The tie bar clip can't move much and those on the sides are limited by the sides of the frame. I think my roller was worn in the center and that is why it rubbed only the ends. I eventually put a very thin shim of wood between the metal and the plastic near the clips. I seemed to move the metal back some, but maybe it just wore the roller off. I thought I would grind the metal down, but I was in a hurry and never did. I guess I didn't help much, just confirmed your problem. I would not put on a new roller until I figured out what was wrong.

my experience is the same as dlbristol in the above post. the chute fit and did not move around but rubbed the roller. i ground the metal back to get the 1/16" clearance as rob mentioned and replaced the roller.
