finish for clothes rack

Going to build a indoor clothes drying rack. The scissor kind that can be folded up and stored.
What kind of finish can be used for this. Will have damp clothes on it. Wife has one now that she bought. Looks like it is aspen wood for the frame and the dowels are whatever.
Problem is the dowels have turn a dark color from being damp. I read on another site that somebody used linseed oil.. Whatever the finish is it cant stain clothes........... thanks

How about polyurethane, shellac or lacquer?

If you are going for a natural finish, I would definitely go with Polyurathane, if painted, use a good semi gloss or gloss finish.

John is right, use polyurethane, 3 to 4 coats, then past wax.

Lacquer or shellac will not stand up to water. a penetrating oil does not stop water from penetrating also.

I've used this, and similar products with success on wood projects that will be exposed to some weather.
