The bed from Hell!
Hi all! Well, I promised to post some pics of the oriental motif bed I was commissioned to do. Mind you, the carvings are 150 years old, from Japan, bought by a restaraunt owner, turned into a stupid booth divider an Asian fast food dump, and eventually was purchased by someone who saw the carved panels for what they were, kept one, and sold one to my client! Whew! What a trail! Thank goodness It will be safe in this head and foot board! It had a gagillon coats of oil based paint on top of GOLD LEAF!. I had to strip as much paint as I could by hand. The old paint would barely soften in my industrial strip tank! All the carving is done by hand with a coping saw, and 56 fractures had to be cross dowelled and glued for repair. Then the Poplar" ordeal I had posted weeks ago. Finally, I got enough nerve to start whacking away at those beautiful posts, getting all the mortise and tennons cut and fitted. Truthfully, I have had a smile on my face since picking up my favorite mortising chisel. It's nice to have chips on the floor instead of old nasty paint dust! More pics to come later today. If you are a part time band leader, does that make you a semi-conductor? Where do all the "unguided" bombs go?

Yes, I have to commend my customer. He does some mild woodworking, so he understands money talks. He has been there every time I needed a draw on my commision. Here are a couple shots of the footboard laying on top of the headboard for layout. Check out the carving. The wood smells like pickles when abraided or cut. It looks like some exotic spruce. Very soft, but sturdy. I was able to salvage several parts of the original framework, made of this aromatic wood. The overall width is larger than a queen sized bed, but that is what he ordered, so I have to offset the rail attatchment points to the lower headboard rail, instead of in the posts themselves.(which would be more common). The client is a heck of a nice guy....so far! You never know what they are gonna do come delivery day!!! jimsjinx
