Shaft extensions

I'm going to be putting a table carriage on the left of my headstock for more table area. I noticed that the coupler wouldn't reach the headstock on the left if I did this. This is what I came up with, a shaft extension. A 5/8" shaft that I ground 2 flats on for the setscrews and a coupling with the setscrews already drilled and tapped. Total cost for two including shipping was under $35.00. Time to make after arrival - about 5 minutes.

I plan on doing the same thing on my SS. Where were you able to find the coupler. I can get the 5/8 shaft but not sure where to get a coupler.

I got them from McMaster-Carr the parts number for the coupler is 6412K15 , the part number for the shaft I got is 6061K435

Be meticulous when you align the shafts. As long as they are properly aligned, I think the extensions will work perfectly.

If there was any problem with balance (alignment) it wouldn't be that hard to make a bearing mount that would attach to the extra carriage. Maybe even a bearing mount attached to a lathe tool rest support.
One is probably unneeded but some of us are pretty good here at thinking through solutions for non problems.

Gee that looks familiar!;) A mortising hold down 'shaft' works also, and already has a flat from end to end.
