tension on quill

One quick question is the pinion shaft part of the quill assembly?

No. The pinion shaft is part of the carriage assembly (514328).

In the illustrated drawing it is item #169 (514329) Pinion Shaft.

I sure hope you've loaded the pdf copy of the Shopsmith catalog. Looking it up is a snap. Don't know what we ever did without it.:rolleyes:
