I would recommend the "slimline" type to start. Many pen kits require different size/specialized bushings. The slimline pens use 7mm bushings which come with the PSI mandrel. You just need to get a 7mm drill bit - or buy pre-drilled blanks.

In addition to the bushings, the Penn State Industries mandrel comes with a 7mm drill bit, so it's a good deal. Their number 2 morse taper mandrel saver also works well in combination with the mandrel. Just make sure the two are well aligned.
