Captive Ring Lathe Tool

Has anyone out there had any luck making your own captive ring tool?

I've managed to talk my dentist into giving me an old dental pick, but I'm not sure how to grind it. I did manage to cut some free with it, but it wasn't pretty, i.e. I got a lot of chatter from the tool.

Also, I've heard somewhere that lathe tools can be ground out of concrete nails. Anyone tried that?

Other ideas?

BTW, in his video; Richard Raffan clears a captive ring with the long point of his skew. I've tried that, but I'm obviously not as good as he is. In theory, a "V" cut with a skew at a shallow enough angle would work, but I'm not that good. I guess that's why he is making videos and I'm not.
