I have been reading as many of ya'lls post as possible, trying to determine what is wrong with my late 70's Mark V. I was ripping a 2x6 a few weeks ago, with a less than sharp blade, and smoked the motor. After cooling off, it ran OK, but a week later I noticed a pronounced vibration sound. I continued to use it over the next couple of weeks and I noticed that the blade was stopping rather quickly when I turned the power off. Yesterday, I turned it on and it ran for a couple of seconds and threw the breaker. I re-set the breaker and tried again and it did the same thing. Today, I began disassembly and ran the motor w/o belt and it seemed to run fine; very smooth and quiet however I have no way of measuring rpm. Then I noticed (on the speed changer) that the clip that holds the rod with the hole in the end was not in the holes, but hanging loose. Sorry for the lack of correct terminology, but if anyone has an idea for me to pursue, I would be grateful. Thanks for reading.
Update:
I just went back out to look at the speed control again and the rod with the holes in it was frozen. I oiled it and broke it free and it does turn rather freely but I'm thinking that the bearing it rides in is probably shot. Any thoughts and is that bearing difficult to replace?

When possible, including pictures in Forum posts always helps to determine solutions to problems.

All bearings and shafts can be replaced on Shopsmith equipment. I always match the Sheaves in sets (control/idler, fan/floating). Contact me off-line for reconditioned/rebuild Shopsmith parts and instructions. Thanks.

The clip is more likely a result rather than a cause.

When was the last time the sheaves were oiled[both control sheave(idler shaft) and floating sheave(motor shaft)]?

I have owned and operated my Shopsmith since I bought it new in the late 70's (I think), but I use it only on occasion so having said that I guess I am classified as a semi-Newbie. I didn't oil the machine because I never thought about taking the cover off to look at it or oil it. Anyway, go ahead and beat me up, then offer me any wisdom you wish to share.
