Shopsmith Power Station Vibration

Post by dpjbmac »

I have a shopsmith power station that is about 7-8 years old. From day one the machine has created quite a bit of vibration. Is there anyway to reduce the vibration? At one time I felt the vibration may be associated with the design of the stand. The stand is lightweight and the drive motor sits at the top. I considered adding weight to the stand to lower the center of gravity.

Does anyone have any ideas on adjustments to the machine to reduce the vibration?

Shopsmith Power Station, Vibration

The physical nature of the beast is going to contribute to a certain amount of vibration and I don't think you can do much with it. However, the level of normal vibration is NOT distracting.

Don't operate with it up on wheels; get a firm base to start with.

Do you have this complaint with specific SPT attached or is it common to all?

Is vibration different (reduced) without any SPT attached?

Make certain the power couplers are properly aligned. Driving through malaligned couplers will create some vibrartion.

Have you checked and possibly adjusted belt tension? If the belts are too loose they will create some unnecessary vibration. I should say belt; while there are two, only one is manually adjustable.

Make certain that all hardware is securely attached.

Shopsmith Vibration

I have reduced vibrations on Shopsmiths by replacing the V-belt(s) with Grizzly G3640 Power Twist® V-Belt - 1/2" x 4' for $23.95 at Amazon.com. If the belt gets loose, just take a link out of the belt. Very easy to adjust the length of the belt to fit and does not take a set like regular V-belts.
