[quote="dusty"]Ed in Tampa, I'm not sure I understand your point. You say the info is available only if you do a google search, not true. It might be easier to find by using a google search but like any hard catalog, you have to search through the pages of the catalog to find what you are interested in.

Help Kit, 515714, is shown on page 71 of the regular SS catalog and again in the Spring Special (per a reible google search). The same verbal description is called out at both locations.

If your point is that that kit description leaves something to be desired - I understand. What shims? what setscrews?

There are 64 set screws used in the standark Mark V configuration. These sets screws represent 14 different parts descriptions (where 5/16" - 8 x 1/4" is a parts description) and are distributed throughout 36 different locations (where miter gauge is a location]

Start on the Shopsmith Home page and using just the key words "Help Kit" or Part number "515714" tell me how you find out what is contained in the kit.

Hardware Maintenance Kit - well, I know there is one but I don't know the part number. I must somehow determine the part number.

reible says use a google search - that works. -or-

shopsmith.com/click on "SawBlade"/click on "Shopsmith's SPRING PROJECT DAYS SALE is off and rolling"/Load the three Spring Project Days pdf files/

-or-

click on each pdf file individually and search for part number 515714. The part we are discussing happens to be in part 3, pages 17-24.

This search yields a highligthed Part Number 515714. Along with it is the ONLY description that I have found of the kit contents.

As soon as I see these pdf files referenced online, I download them into my computer. Once they are on board my machine, they can be searched for "number", name, color, screwsize, whatever.

The main catalog was available online and section 4 of that set of pdf files was the Illustrated Parts Breakdown (IPB). I failed to download a copy. It was a searchable Parts List for the Mark V and several SPT. This last online update to Shopsmith.com does NOT include the IPBs.

Will I ever learn to follow my own advise?

:)

Thank you. But don't miss my point I had both the name and part # but I could not do a simple search on Shopsmith's website to find a detailed description of what the kit contained.

As you clearly demonstrated you either had to know it was included in the catalog, then download the catalog, then search it to find the description or leave the Shopsmith site and use google to find it.

My point is this Help Kit was named and the part # given as special offer in a Sawdust session (something SS wanted to sell) but it was virtually impossible to find any info about it.

To me this is a perfect example of what Shopsmith needs to do to improve their website. Each item should be easily found by using a simple search on either the name or item number, and once found it should contain both a picture and complete description of the item.

2 Help Kits ?

Post by a1gutterman »

Hi Ed,

I am sorry that you are finding it hard to locate the contents of 515714. I can tell you exactly what is in it. First though, I want to tell you that, whether it makes sense or not, the description is acurate, but not complete; from the internet catolog:

515714 Help Kit Hardware Pack
This item is a service or replacement part. If you have any questions about this item, please contact our Technical Support line prior to ordering. The number to call is 1-800-762-7555. Thank you!

It is not complete, because it does not tell you what "service or replacement part" it is replacing. I can give you that info also; again, from the internet catolog:

515325 MARK V Help KitHelp Kit for quick or routine maintenance.
Over 60 vital pieces included;
5/32" Allen wrench; 5.5 Oz Bostik Top-Cote; Pocket Oiler; Shop Rags (2); Shims (18); Set-screws Tapered (2), 5/16"x18"x1/4"(20), 5/16"x18"x3/8" (6), Nylok (5), Table Insert screws; Mark V Alignment and Instruction Manual..

Are you ready for this? Part number 515714 is a plastic bag filled with all of the hardware that comes with part number 515325. It is the "replacement part" for the help kit's hardware contents. It does not have the allen wrench; Top-Cote; pocket oiler; shop rags or alignment and instruction manual.

I know this because I recently received the Help Kit (515325) and included is a plastic bag with all of the hardware in it that has the number 515714 labeled on it.;)

Shopsmith Mark V Set Screws

Post by billmayo »

Dusty, I am curious as to where you got the information as to 64 set screws in 36 locations. I tried to put together a sheet with this information last year. I started to list the part number, thread size/length, allen wrench size, location (what schematic and reference number) but only found information for 14 locations. When giving the different set screw part numbers to the Shopsmith person, most of the numbers were not in stock or not supported any more. Any help provided would be appreciated. I will post the sheet if I can find and list most of the set screws. Thanks.

Which sets screws, by part number, are in the kit? Call customer service, I'll bet they know.

I have the kit but I can't tell you what part numbers are in it. I could if I wanted to take each part and find it in the illustrated parts drawings but I'm not THAT CURIOUS.

What is interesting to me is that I have more shims and more set screws in my kit than are detailed to be part of the kit. I haven't gone out and bought any so that must mean they are from my equipment. I am for ever picking up something off the floor that I do not know the source of. I do know that I do NOT have 14 different type setscrews.

What Magazines Do I Read

Post by dusty »

Bill, one day when I was bed ridden, I sat with the illustrated drawings and went page by page writing down the part number and quantity used. I then combined common items (like 5/16" - 8 x 3/8") to get the quantity used count.

Not a very scientific search. I'll pull my scratch notes together and email it to you. Not this week though. I have a TA that will take my spare time this week.

Shopsmith Setscrews

Post by dusty »

This list came together a lot easier than I thought it would. It is based on my own research of data available in the various parts lists and catalogs. It may not be complete and it may not be completely correct. I hope that it is of some value.

Shopsmith Setscrews

Post by dusty »

This list came together more easily than expected. It is nothing more than an attempt to compile information contained in the Shopsmith Catalog and Parts Lists in the Maintenance Manuals.

I hope it is of some help.
