Custom Sewing Machine Cabinet
My Bride has dreamed for years of having this cabinet for her quilting room. It began as my project. After the failed shoulder surgery it became our project. I hope you enjoy seeing the product of our efforts. Fjimp

Thank each of you for nice comments.dusty wrote:Very nice job, Jim. Is this your design or are you building from a plan? Either way, it would make many a seamstress jealous.
Dusty, Jan and I visited quilting shows and several sewing machine vendors. We also purchased two different sets of plans. Unfortunately we found none that offered the assortment of requirements or advantages she desired. We worked together at planning the basic cabinet and then made numerous changes along the way. The basic cabinet is completed. She has ordered suspended tray shelves that slide on tracks in two of the drawers that will be custom made to hold sewing machine feet and bobbins. I am also building a smaller cabinet with three drawers to sit along side that unit. In a separate message I will send a picture of a quilt she recently completed. No not on this table but yes in part using the machine shown. Fjimp

Talented Quilter
Here are two quilts that illustrate Jan's ability. The Dresden Quilt is one that thowed up in pieces in a booth at our annual relief sale last October. The blocks date back to the 1930's. Jan brought it home and carefully removed all nine blocks from what someone had begun many years ago. She then located period materials to create a background and assembled the quilt on her machine. Finally she hand quilted it. This quilt will be offered for sale in a relief auction this coming month.
The second one is a king sized bed quilt required over two years to design, assemble and hand quilt and was sold in years relief auction. Our daughter Karen designed the quilt and selected colors (with some assistance from Jan) then Jan assembled the quilt and Jan along with ladies from church hand quilted it.
I am very proud of her talents and hope you will enjoy seeing her work. Fjimp

Do you guys watch the "Quilters" on PBS on Saturday mornings? At least that is where it is at here in Tucson. It immediately precedes "This Old House Hour" here in Tucson.

Super nice table, Jim!:D I love the work you did on this piece of furniture! Beautiful work with plywood and very nice edges on the top. Also excellent work on the drawers. Did you turn the drawer pulls? Anyway the wood pulls add nice character to the look of the piece.
My wife immediately fell in love with the back apron. "That's super - what every quilter dreams of."
Also, please pass our (Wife and my) congratulations and best wishes to Jan!

The drawer pulls are ceramic. Jan had picked them for the kitchen cabinets in our custom built home in Virginia. The realtors all agreed they were out of style and must be replaced for the house to sell. We did so and carried them all the way to Colorado. I am too darned cheap to use anything else until I run out of these. Given how large that kitchen was I will be awhile using them up. I am thankful my father in law had built a similar cabinet as I learned from his how to make the two hinged tops fit together in a smooth way. I must confess I truly learned a great deal from this project. Now I begin it's companion which will be a good deal smaller and far simpler.charlese wrote:Super nice table, Jim!:D I love the work you did on this piece of furniture! The best part for me is seeing how thrilled she is. I truly believe this is the nicest 70th birthday gift I could have given her. Our daughter just called to announce she is fixing dinner for the birthday party Sunday. I win all the way around. I don't have to cook and will enjoy a gourmet meal. How much better could it get:D:) Fjimp
